Eine kleine Nachtmusik, (translation, “A Little Night Music,”) is a wonderful example of the special-occasion music Mozart composed throughout his career. These works, usually in many movements, were created for upper class soirées or weddings of wealthy merchants and frequently for performance out of doors and/or in the evening. They were intended to be light, festive background music to accompany social chatter and plenty of eating and drinking. However, the title in Mozart’s native German, rather than the Italian he customarily used for such works, suggest that this might well have been a personal piece. Eine kleine Nachtmusik, unlike many of Mozart’s pieces, follows the compositional rules of his time meticulously to create a work of ideal refinement and charm.

This arrangement for tuba quartet is of the first movement in sonata-allegro form. It varies slightly from the original in that it gives the melody to all players, rather than just the lead part. Some rhythmic string techniques have been changed and octaves have been changed to better suit the tuba-euphonium quartet. Las Tubas de Tucson has attempted to recreate the classical style of Mozart with non-classical instrumentation, while being unapologetically tuba-euphonium in sound.
