about

Winds Sketches was originally composed for and dedicated to the President’s Own United States Marine Band Tuba-Euphonium Quartet. It expands upon an earlier work written for the group by Brian Balmages. The first movement of Wind Sketches, Whirlwind, was originally a stand alone piece for tuba-euphonium quartet. The second movement’s title, Fremantle Doctor, is the name for the cooling summer winds along Australia’s southwestern coast. The third movement, White Squall, takes its name from sudden and violent windstorms that happen at sea. This movement is in a compound meter that gives it an almost sea shanty-like feel. The final movement, Vientos y Fugas, does not refer to any specific wind-related phenomena, but lays down a nice Latin groove to close out the piece.
